Las Vegas is becoming home to an increasing number of retired racing greyhounds.  In April 1999, GPA/SN-LV became a fully-fledged chapter of the national Greyhound Pets of America organization.

The Luxor and Caesar's Palace aren't the only places in Las Vegas where the ancient past comes to life. In family rooms and back yards all across the valley, living reminders of a rich past mingle with us mere mortals.

Evidence of greyhound-type dogs dates back 6000 - 8000 years ago. They are etched into funerary vases, depicted in temple drawings; they were bred for the hunt and kept by royalty as the consummate companion. The greyhound is the only breed of dog specifically mentioned in the Bible (Proverbs 30:29-31, KJV) and the first dog named in literature (Homer's Oddyssey, 800 B.C.).

The history of the greyhound is impressive and regal, but even more important is this: Greyhounds are still around and they make wonderful pets!

Thousands of greyhounds become available each year as their racing careers end. These dogs, normally two to five years old, have never received individual attention and reward their adoptive families with endless gratitude and loyalty, heart-tickling antics, and years of priceless memories.

Greyhound Quick Q & A

Are greyhounds aggressive? Generally, greyhounds are not aggressive and would rather walk away from an altercation than get involved. As a precaution, they do wear muzzles when racing. Outside of the competitive arena, these dogs are normally gentle and good natured.

Don't they need a lot of exercise? The greyhounds available for adoption are "retired" so have no need to engage in the rigorous training regimen of the kennel. They do enjoy a the freedom of a fenced backyard and a good walk each day. If you don't have a fenced area where they can "zoom" at will, they may need two walks a day.

How big are greyhounds? They vary in size from 23-30 inches tall and 50-95 pounds. Females tend to be smaller (55-65 pounds) and males larger (70-80 pounds).

Is this dog a good match for my children? Because of the greyhound's temperament, most do very well with kids. If provoked, they will typically walk (or run) away.

What is a greyhound's life expectancy? Twelve to fourteen years.

Will the dog come after my cat? Many greyhounds are "cat safe." GPA/SN-LV cat tests each dog, so you need only to ask for one who passed. As with any new pet introduction, you should supervise interaction for the first couple of weeks.

Okay, I want one!

Can I have a grey dog? Grey (actually blue) greyhounds are extremely rare. Because the dogs are bred for speed and not for looks, they come in all sorts of colors. We are interested in finding a good personality match; if your primary concern is appearance, chances are you'd do better with another breed.

Will the dog protect my house? No! Greyhounds are friendly and affectionate and will welcome visitors into your home. The majority of greyhounds rarely (if ever) bark.

Why do you ask so many personal questions? We love these dogs! We want to make sure you get a dog who will permanently fit into your home. In order to ascertain this, we need specific information about your wants, needs, and environment. On the other end, we've been monitoring the dogs since they left the track. We strive to pair you with a dog who has the qualities that are compatible with your family!

How do I get more information? Follow the links below to fill out an interest form or to find informative links. You can also call 702-392-5822 or e-mail us!

We now have copies of a video tape about the GPA Los Angeles group's trip to the Caliente race track to pick up greyhounds. This tape was made by and for the Animal Rescue television show. It's well done and very interesting.

Whether you now have a greyhound or are contemplating adopting one, this tape gives you a terrific idea of how these dogs come off the track, and what steps come next (bathing, vetting, cat checking, foster homes, etc.) before their permanent homes can be found.

The tapes are available for $12.00 plus $2.00 s/h from GPA/SN-LV, P. O. Box 71803, Las Vegas, Nevada 89170-1803. Ask for the "Money Dog" tape.
